Photo selection and rejection Front cover by Kate
I really like this picture as it looks
natural and energetic. She looks relaxed and cheerful. The lighting
is just right as it doesn't clash with the model. The background is
natural and looks good. She is dressed casual but again isn't showing
the stereotypical female as she isn't posing seductively and is
wearing a lot of clothes.
This picture would appeal to a younger
audience and mainly females as they could relate to her.
This picture is good as the model is
staring into the camera. She is half smiling and half pouting making
her look quite sincere. The background is natural again and her hands
are placed intentionally over her knees to make her look
sophisticated. Her hair falls nicely and the slight wind blowing it a
bit makes it look more attractive. She does look more like a
stereotypical representational female in this image as her eyes look
serious.
The model is trying to come across as
strong and dominant in this picture. She is staring blankly into he
camera. The background is just the same as the rest of the pictures.
She isn't showing a stereotypical representation in this image as she
looks in command. The lighting is good, not too bright. The model is
centre frame which makes her the main focus. Im not sure a picture
like this would appeal to our target audience though.
I liked this image as the model is
looking into the camera and connecting with the audience. However you
can see the photographers reflection in the window and the background
is quite dull.
This image is good but I cannot use it
was the pole takes up a lot of the attention an the background is
cluttered and messy. The model is too far away and you cannot see her
face to connect.
Photo selection and rejection DPS by kate
I chose this image as a selection as
the model is looking directly into the camera, connecting with the
audience. The lightening is bright but it makes the photo more upbeat
which connects with the article. The bright lips on the model attract
the attention to her face. The background is natural, the cars in
the background is not what I want in the picture but I wil edit them
out in photoshop. It is a mid-shot which is good because it means
there isn't too much happening in the picture. The model isn't doing
a striking pose or wearing little clothes which makes the photo more
classy.
I also chose this photo as the model
looks focused and in the zone, she is not looking into the camera but
her facial expression still connects with the audience. The
lightening is still bright which keeps the picture upbeat. Again, the
cars are an issue but they can be edited out in photoshop. I don't
like the drain in the picture either but again that can be edited
out. The model isn't posing seductively or wearing little clothes so
the article may appeal to girls as well as teenage boys.
Finally I chose this as a selection
because the model is smiling directly into the camera, connecting
with the audience and making the article seem happy and upbeat.
Again, the bright lips attract the
reader to her face. The cars will have to be edited out in photoshop
again. The lightening is a little bit too bright, you can't see her
eyes very well but it works too. She isn't sticking to the
stereotypical representations of females in this picture as she isn't
posing seductively and she is taking control of the picture, she
isn't trying to sell herself with small outfits.
I like this photo as it shows the model
in full popstar mode. She has her eyes open but she isn't looking
into the camera. There is also too much going on in the picture, the
cars and the pole in the background make the picture look tacky. The
lighting is good. The mic takes a bit of the attention away from the
model herself.
This Picture would have been nice, it
was a high angled photo but I did it slightly too high so you can't
see the models face very well. She is not looking into the camera
which makes no connection to the audience. Her hands look as they are
doing something also which is a distraction from the rest of the
picture.

Rejections
In this photograph I trailed out a different pose however, I do not think it works well. Also I am not keen on the tan tights as the lighting creates an uneven skintone. Also she is not directly eye-contact towards the reader so there is no connection.
In this photograph I don't think the 'peace' sign works well as it does not resemble anything. Again this is just a trail pose. The facial expression is gormless so it looks like she is looking past the reader not at the reader.
In this photograph I don't like the angle the model poses as she doesn't look very comfortable.
Selection
1. In this photograph I have altered the outfit to black tights as it is more attractive. This pose works well as it shows confidence in herself. The lighting quality works well on her face as it is even.
2. In this pose It shows close up detail but as a full-shot which works well. This pose is different compared to all the other photographs which makes it stand out more.
Also shows good eye-contact and confidence.
Here I have shown a couple of rejects and some selections in which I am considering to use for the DPS. The final image i wanted for the DPS is image 2. Then I manipulated the background on Adobe to look like a blank canvas as that is what I planned for my photo shoot. I have chosen a black and gold glittery dress to fit in with the house style. Also it shows of her personality of young and fun in her costume.
This is the final outcome for the DPS photo. I have flipped the image vertically so that the text can go on the other side and extended the canvas size. Then cloned the background to create an even tone and altered the lighting balance of the whole photo in which I think this works well.

Shoot One: Bethany Johnson
After the photo shoot I came to a total of 30 photos. However I have selected the top 5 in which I have then edited them slightly using Adobe. Here I have shown a couple of rejects and some selections in which I am considering to use for the contents page. I have chosen the background to be in the woods as it is not distractive and the colours co-ordinate well with the house style colours.
Rejections
In this photograph I love the pose and foreground because it shows confidence in herself and the pose strikes powerfulness. Also it follows the rule of thirds with her eyes in the top third and waist down in the bottom third. However the quality of lighting on her hair is to bright and takes away the quality of the look. Also a headphone is shown out of her pocket which is not meant to be there. So this photo is not suitable.
In this photograph the contrast levels in the background need to be manipulate slightly as the top half is brighter than the bottom half. I like the pose in this photograph but I feel like it doesn't work. However the hair again is not the correct quality of lighting and lacks detail. Furthermore the head is tilted which I did not want.
Selections
1. In this photograph I love the background and model pose as it shows more confidence. The braces used in this pose adds more effect to the outfit as she holds onto them. The quality of lighting is perfect as nothing is to bright or too dark. The mid-shot also works better as it closes up on the face while the outfit is still present.

2. In this photograph the pose is more striking and is the most confident out of the 3 images by the eyes looking directly into the reader showing power. Also it shows her figure of more with her curves and this links back to the representation of femininity. Furthermore the levels of brightness and contrast are good quality as the background is more blurred making the model look more sharper. This mid-shot also uses the rule of thirds as her eyes are on the top third and waist on the bottom third.
3. In this photograph it is similar to the first selection photo however I feel this is a stronger image as she connects the the reader by looking into them directly. The pose shows confidence again and draws detail to the braces as she holds them. The quality of lighting is slightly too bright at the top however, this can be adapted easily and wont take-away any of the quality. Overall, I think this image works well.
I have asked a few people on their opinion of which photograph works best and overall I have decided to choose the second image. This is because it is the best quality and the pose show the most confidence and power as she looks directly into the readers eyes and strikes passion. The mid-shot works best compared to the two rejection photos of a long shot as it shows more quality in her face (make-up). The quality of lighting is excellent and the focus of the model is excellent as it is not blurred and the photo is straightened. The photograph also follows the rule of thirds.

In this photograph I like the mid-shot and direct look to the reader, However her arm is cut off at the side so this photo is not suitable.
In this photograph I like the facial expressions. However the pose does not work well and doesn't reflect anything.
Selections
1. In this photograph I like the pose and direct look to the reader. I have manipulated this image to black and white effect in which I think this has worked well in. It follows the rule of thirds and the quality of lighting works well.
2. In this photograph I like the close-up shot and facial expression. The light balance works well as it as even tone.
3. In this photograph I like the pose as it shows confidence. Also I love the black and white effect as it contrasts well. However it is a very similar photo to shoot one of Bethany that I have all ready chosen.
Overall I have posted these pictures on Flickr and have entitled their opinion as well and I have .decided that image one works well the best as it shows a close-up shot of the model which shows detail. The black and white effect works well as it contrasts the magazine making it stand out more. The quality of lighting works well and the photo does not chop any part of the model off.
In this photograph I like the facial expressions. However the pose does not work well and doesn't reflect anything.

Laura-Jane White Selection and rejection of photos Front Cover
Rejections
In this photograph I have rejected this because the image crops parts of the hair at the side so it is not suitable. Also the background is too grey as usually front covers work best bas on a white background.
In this photograph I tried an angle like in the NME magazine in which the shot is taken looking down on the person diagonally. I don't think this photo works well as it does not position well. I should properly have taken it at a lower angle for this image to work.
In this photograph the image is too flat as it looks to straight. This gives no effect to the image. The facial expression does not reflect any of her personality as she looks glazed. Also I think this would have worked better as a close-up shot as the bottom half of image is blank. Could have included accessories. (E.g.) Necklace.
Selection
1. In this photograph I have brightened the lighting to give more quality. I like the smile and angle of this shot as they compliment each other and the red stands out against the white which runs with the house style colours.
In this photograph it is similar to image 2 however, it is a close-up shot which I think does work better. However this is not as sharp but I could adjust this using Adobe. The quality of lighting works well as there is no uneven tone.
Overall I have chosen image 1 as my front cover photo as the background is the brightest and is easier to apply text around the image as is it is focused on the left side of the page. Also enough room to fit the masthead on unlike image 2. The flash on the camera works well as it brightens up the detail. The model shows a confident smile as she has achieved her career. The red stands out against the white canvas background which creates a good effect.
