Evaluation of male/female representations by kate

Evaluation

Over time females in the media have been represented as slim and attractive. In film's roles, especially action, male's usually play the strong, dominant lead role and the women play their sidekicks or 'prize' at the end of the film. Males in hollywood are presented as being buff and independent, you wouldn't find a skinny, geeky guy playing a lead role in a hollywood movie.

Even over time in history, the representations apply to the female and male roles nowadays. Young teens boys now think they have to be like the role models, anorexia in teen males has increased alarmingly in recent years. Young teen girls look at skinny, attractive girls in magazine and in films and think thats what they must be like. Men and women are encouraged to aspire to be like the role models they see in the magazines.

Whereas in the music industry being a 'skinny', 'geeky' male is just as cool as being 'buff' and 'fit'. you wouldn't find a big buff guy trying to sing a slow, emotional song as it wouldn't suit them. In this industry it is just as much about the music as it is the visual appeal.

In chart music nowadays the best music comes from the unstereotypical singers such as adele, ed sheeran, etc. These people aren't all skinny, buff or attractive but they make some of the best music in the business. They never do photoshoots in magazines or other publishing stunts as the other average singers that are attractive and skinny do them because they can 'get away with it'. The chart music isn't always about visual appeal the best music gets the most attention on radio's as visual appeal is irrelevant there.

  1. Some good work here that shows your understanding of representations. You need to like it to your own ideas for your music magazine.
